General Instructions and Precautions

Derailment of cars
When cars have been involved in derailment or collision it is possible that the bearings or truck frames have been damaged, or that the bearings have slipped out of the adapter seating. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to observe the following point:

  1. Bearings having been involved in major derailment must be removed from the axles and send for complete inspection and overhaul.
Note : Wheel sets involved in a major derailment must be checked for distortion on anaxle lathe after bearing removal.
  2. Bearings involved in minor derailment of empety or loaded cars at a speed not exceeding 15km/h or not having moved off the rail for more than 50 metres are to be inspected as follows:

  • Bearings must be sufficiently clean to permit proper examination of all exterior parts.
  • Inspect outer ring for breaks
  • Inspect for loose or damaged seals
  • Inspect for broken end cap, missing or loose cap screws
  • Inspect for loose backing ring
  • Rotate bearing manually to detect any signs of distress, either by sound or by feel
  • If these checks are satisfactory, bearing may be returned to service. Otherwise bearing must be removed, and sent for inspection and overhaul

Cleaning of the cars
When hosing the cars, be careful the jet of water is not directed towards the seals. Water destroys the lubricity of the grease, resulting in failure of the bearing.

Abrasive blasting
Should cars or trucks be sand or grit blasted, make certain that the bearing is properly protected.

Electrick Welding
If welding works is performed on cars or trucks, the earth connection mustnot be fixed to the axle, wheel, bogie or rail under any circumstances. To prevent the electric current from passing through the bearing, the earthing cable must be attached to the part being welded.

Painting
As the adapter is a loose fit on the outer ring, the latter may creep within the adapter. Therefore, the outer ring must not be covered with paint. Moreover, it is protected before the axle is painted.

Wheel turning
The bearing unit does not have to be removed for wheel turning operation. The axle end cap shoud however be temporarily be replaced by a protective steel cover. The backing ring seal should also be protected by suitable wrapping.

After turning, the axle is to be cleaned so that no grut or swarf is present at the seal contact area. Check the seals for possible cuts or damage. Fit a properly cleaned end cap and new locking plate. Tighten cap scres with a torque wrench to 200 +5 Nm and secure locking tabs in accordance with procedure described under section 6 to install axle end cap”.
