Application
FAG Tarol units are primily used for journal bearing arrangements in freight cars, locomotives, passenger cars, rail cars, urban railroad system and subways. Its most common application is with freight cars.
Design
Fag Tarol units are of simple construction and are supplied ready forinstallation. The core of the bearing assembly is a double row tapered roller bearing. It is sealed on both sides and completed with backing ring and end cap assembly makes up a compact bearing.
The FAG Tarol bearing unit fully corresponds to the Association of American Railroads(AAR) specifications. It is covered by the AAR certificate number 13.
In bogies with side frame openings corresponding to AAR specifications, the bearing assembly is supported by an adapter.
Lubrication
Tarol units are lubricated with a lithium soap base grease of the NLGI penetration class 2 which meets the specifications of the AAR M-942. Tarol units need not be relubricated between the general inspection or overhaul and therefore have no relubrication possibility.
Relubrication and overhaul is determined according to the operating conditions of the bearings. In this instance, a bearing should be overhauled when attaining 500.000 kmor having been in service for seven years.
Handling
The components of Fag Tarol journal roller bearings are finished to very close tolerances on highprecision machines, making the bearing assembly a precision machine element requiring utmost care in handling. Mounting and dismounting ofFag Tarol journal roller bearings should only be performed by experienced personnel. Only professional and careful mounting of the journal roller bearing guarantees a normal service life and reliable operation.
Personnel having to handle the FAG Tarol journal roller bearing should be given detailedinstruction in respect of storage, mounting dismounting, maintenance and overhaul of this bearing. This manual is compiled to given all such information and should be a workbook for personnel involved in the operation of Tarol bearing equipped rolling stock.
Storage and packing
FAG Tarol bearings are supplied from the factory either in bulk on a pallet with cardboard protection or individually in cardboard boxes. The proection is effective as long be unwrapped when all preparatory mounting work is completed. The bearing should be stored in a suitable storage area meeting the following requirements :
- Constant room temperature
- No direct sunlight exposure
- Storage in dry atmosphere
- No open water or water pipes in the vicinity which could produce condensate
- No storage of bearings against cold wall or on stone floors
- No corrosive chemicals such as acid ammonia chloride of lime etc. in the storage room
- The bearings should be stored upright with the protective triangular cardboards inside the bearing bore at all time
Assembly area
The assembly area should be spacious, clean and dust free. Shops where welding or machining work, for example by grinding machine, is performed or where compressed air is used for cleaning operations, are unsuitable for the installations of roller bearings.
Just prior to installation, the original packing should be removed from the bearings. Never leave the bearings uncovered or without the cardboard insert. Filling particles, sand or other foreign matter could easily contaminate the bearings.
Should contamination occur inspite of these precautions, dismount and clean the bearing in accordance with the instructions given in section 7.
